The Humane Society of New York
    Questions:
    1. When and why was the Humane Society of New York founded?
    2. What services does the Humane Society provide?
    3. What do you think it means that the Humane Society is actually working for the animals (rather than for people)?
  1. Why is it so wonderful to adopt a dog or a cat rather than go out and buy one?
  2. In order to be good pet owner, what are three important things to consider before adopting one?
  3. Answer either a or b.
      a. Do you own or have you ever owned a pet? What kind? Write one interesting story about your pet or tell what you love most about owning it.
        b. If you could own a pet, what animal would you choose and why? What do you think would be the best thing about owning one?
          Activities:
            A) Go visit the Humane Society or another animal shelter in your hometown. Come back and report to your class what you learned from going there.
              B) This may be hard, but what you learn may be very important in helping to save animals. Write a report on animal shelters telling: why the animals are there, what it is like there, how many animals go to shelters, what happens to them if they are not adopted. Share this information with your class or in the school newspaper.
            1. C) If you love animals and want to help them, see if there is some way you can help out an animal shelter by volunteering.
            2. D) Help raise money in your school or community (by doing a book or bake sale or something else) to donate to a shelter or animal organization.
            3. E) Go to a shelter and take pictures of some of the animals there and post them at your school to inspire other kids to adopt one. Maybe you can even adopt an animal for your family and report back to the class about the process.
            4. F) Each student can do a one page report on an animal that people can have as a pet, sharing information on how to take care of that pet. A picture can be drawn of each pet and a pet bulletin board can display students’ work.
